Media Experience
Year Organization Responsibility
2001-2002 Freelance Writer Regularly written editorials for The Indianapolis Star. In addition to writing for The News and The Star he has been Indiana stringer for Time magazine and The Washington Post. He also wrote articles that appeared in the Detroit Free Press and the Chicago Sun-Times.
1999-2001 The Indianapolis Star Environmental reporter.
1969-1998 The Indianapolis News Education Editor, covered central Indiana school desegregation lawsuit. Legislative Bureau, covered Indiana General Assembly for 10 sessions. Wrote weekly satire column that appeared on the front page in 1971. Federal courthouse beat, continued coverage on desegregation and also reported on a number of major trials and lawsuits in 1975. Editorial writer and editorial page columnist in 1982. Became chief editorial writer in 1998.

Teaching Experience

I've taught J200 news writing course, Opinion and Editorial Writing at IUPUI on and off since about 1980. I developed with James W. Brown, Executive Associate Dean of the Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis School of Journalism, a course in online computer research and expository writing course that was to our knowledge one of the first online courses in the country, and the first at IUPUI or IU. In 2003 I developed an online J200 course. I also taught one semester of desktop publishing.

Member, Marietta College Mass Media Advisory Committee.

Philosophy of teaching

Journalism students can best learn how to write by writing and having their work critiqued.

Professional Service

Previous professional service includes: Indianapolis Press Club A-Board member; Atex Newspaper Users Group; SPJ.

Professional Development

Hechinger Institute on Education and the Media Seminar on Education for Editorial Writers at Columbia University's Teachers College in 1998 and named to the inaugural Pew Fellowships Gatekeepers' Conference on U.S. Media and the World at the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies, 1999.

Personal Interests

Birding; Bicycling. Past board member of the Eagle Creek Park Foundation.
